Job Summary:
The Forensic Pathology Assistant is responsible for providing support to the Forensic Pathologist in conducting autopsies, collecting and analyzing evidence, and assisting in the determination of cause and manner of death. The role requires exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Assist the Forensic Pathologist in conducting autopsies and post-mortem examinations on deceased individuals, following established protocols and procedures.
2. Prepare and maintain autopsy suites, ensuring cleanliness, organization, and availability of necessary equipment, supplies, and materials.
3. Collect and preserve evidence during autopsies, ensuring proper documentation and chain of custody procedures are followed.
4. Accurately record observations, measurements, and findings during autopsies, maintaining detailed and comprehensive case notes.
5. Assist in the collection of biological samples, such as blood, tissue, and fluids, for analysis and testing purposes.
6. Prepare and package specimens for laboratory analysis, ensuring proper labeling and documentation.
7. Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, ensuring accuracy and reliability of results.
8. Assist in the preparation of reports and documentation related to autopsy findings, including cause and manner of death determinations.
9. Collaborate with law enforcement agencies, legal professionals, and other stakeholders to provide expert advice and testimony when required.
10. Keep abreast of current forensic science techniques, research, and developments through continuous professional development and training.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field. A Master's degree is preferred.
2. Proven experience in a forensic laboratory or medical examiner's office, specializing in forensic pathology.
3. Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology, with a specific focus on forensic medicine.
4. Proficiency in conducting autopsies and post-mortem examinations, including knowledge of proper techniques, procedures, and safety protocols.
5. Familiarity with evidence collection and preservation techniques, ensuring adherence to legal and regulatory standards.
6. Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to accurately record and document findings.
7. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex information and draw logical conclusions.
8. Exceptional organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
9. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
10. Knowledge of relevant legal and ethical guidelines governing forensic pathology and laboratory practices.
11. Proficiency in using forensic laboratory equipment and software applications for analysis and documentation.
12. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with tact and discretion.
